Joel's Movie Review: Pathfinder
Two or three months ago I was interested in watching Pathfinder, because the poster looked dark and fantastic (fantastic in its sense of fantasy, not in the sense of "awesome-ness"). As the months went by, and as I watched that poster over and over my e
xcitement about it waned. Then I watched the trailer, and it was interesting, it promised something good (except for the cliché at the end of it, with the sword at the middle of the screen behind the title of the movie, which foreshadowed the exact opposite).
So, I went to the movies with wary hopes, and with the recomendation from someone at work. And, by the 20th minute of watching, I had already decided that it wasn't good. Nope. It wasn't.
Pathfinder starts with the massacre of native american indians by the vykings. Among the vykings there's a boy who refuses to be as brutal as his people, and doesn't want to kill an indian child. The vykings leave him in the strange land. So, we all know where this is going now, right? First, he is rejected, but then they realize his one of them, but then, as he gets older, and as his skin color is different, and as his thoughts are those of vengeange, he is not considered by the leaders as "one worthy of" some thing. But then he proves to be a real indian and whatnot. Well, that's exactly the plot here, with the only difference that here is a story about vykings, woooooh, but it wasn't enough.
Specific problems I must point out.
One:
The previously refered clichéd story. It was completely predictable. The indians died. There was another indian village. They escaped on the past of the east "because on the west there is a threat of avalanche" (there was snow there). And so, the protagonist led the vykings through the west, yada yada, you've seen movies, you know... The movie comes complete with the token scene of the hero waving his sword around, as in karate practice. But, not only was that cliché, it even looked clumsy and unpracticed...
They should have watched Kill Bill II to see how that's done properly.
Two:
The lack of dialogue in the movie, makes for little interaction between characters, AAAND the dialogue that is there is really bland. Example: after watching an hour or so of vykings killing indians relentlessly and mercilessly, there is this dialog: (Ghost is the main character, his name is Ghost because his skin is pale, compared to that of the indians).
Ghost: "They are not men, they are beasts."
And I'm like: "DUH, dude, you don't say...! Come on! I've been watching the whole movie and I KNOW they are beasts, you dumbass..."
They should have watched American Beauty for a class on dialogue.
Three:
The photography of the movie was HORRIBLE! HORRIBLE! And I'll say it again: HORRIBLE. The movie has this gray, black, white, dirty, gritty look throughout, as if the environment was ever cloudy. And believe me, I LOVE cloudy days, and I love when huge amounts of rain fall, and I love the somber tones the gray clouds give to the earth and all things living; but instead of giving the movie a sense of gothic crudeness, it seemed like a defect, as if the shots weren't good enough, so they just took all the colors away and let it be black, white, brown, grey and dark green, so that you couldn't see its flaws. If they had made the movie IN black and white, it would probably have looked better... I mean, I couldn't see anything! I wanted to shove the brightness and contrast of the screen!! Things were so dark that you couldn't see details, nor small actions, or ANY action. In a movie, eyes are important (for they are the window to ones soul), and I think the eyes of people in this movie looked plain, unexpresive and devilish (for they had no bright spots), and that is IF you can even see them. They should have left some COLOR, gosh!, I didn't even see the red of blood, even after TWO indian massacres...
There are so many movies that are gothic, or film noirs, or just plain black and white, and you can see everything: Underworld, The Number 23, Sin City. And others are just plain dark: The Others, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (best HP yet), War of the Worlds, and they are awesome movies... They should have studied them better.
Four:
There is one thing that I REALLY hate in action movies, and it is the fact that the camera shakes and shakes and shakes when people are fighthing. I think it is a cheap, unimaginative, uninteresting and stupid way of filming action. Why would any director shake the camera when the hero knocks the villain? Why? Is it TOO violent to show it directly? Or did it look so bad and stiff on the set that you HAD to move the camera so you would have more movement on the scene? Fights are one of the most sublime things in movies (for it is "the struggle of life" translated into the physical and the visual). But, my God, that camera would never stop shaking violently, it was so annoying, and, again, I couldn't see how they were fighting, it was just a big mess of people falling around and screaming.
Movies they should have learned from: Lord of the Rings (best fights ever), Fight Club, Hero, Fearless, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (these Asians are awesome).
Five:
The SENSELESS violence. I have nothing against senseless violence, but the senselessness has to have some kind of sense. Kill Bill, Lord of the Rings, any war movie, Children of Men, and Terminator 3, and Pan's Labyrinth, and more recently "300", are the epitome of violence, and still their violence had a purpose. In Kill Bill, the bride had to be violent to be taken seriously by Bill. In Lord of the Rings, they were fighting to save their land. In Children of Men, the violence was what the protagonists were trying to get away from, it was part of their environment. In Terminator 3, it was to protect the future of the world. In Pan's Labyrinth the violence was raw, detailed and painful (and because of that visibility it would make you flich) and it was done to characterize the evil spanish captain. And in "300", the violence just looked good!, but the spartans were born and raised to be brutal soldiers, so it was understandable, expected and almost obligatory.
But the violence in Pathfinder comes without mercy and without any purpose. The vykings just come horseriding, killing everyone in overlong scenes, with many kinds of weapons, in different kinds of ways: troats cut, severed heads, crucified bodies, impailed heads, smashed chests... Still, it meant nothing. They were just killing for the sake of killing. And probably that was done to make us HATE the vykings for killing the poor indians, but actually, they never made us love the indians to care much (after all, some of the indians didn't like the hero completely; so why would I care?). So that, and the fact that much of the violence was blotted out by darkness and stupid camera shakes (notice that I didn't say "camera movements") made me actually fall asleep at some point. And THAT is a sin for a movie. It shall not be pardoned.
I have to make a final comparison. Pathfinder was supposed to be what they call "a ride", by that I mean (or THEY mean) that the movie's action never stops. I could recal the "300" again, saying that THAT was a huge ride, but as fast as "300" was on the "ride" factor, no movie has come close to being a COMPLETE ride than Terminator 3. It's true that the characters had already been develped, and that is a big relief to filmmakers/storytellers, because they can concentrate on the story, but still, if Terminator 3 had been the first instalment of a franchise it would have still been a awesome movie (I think). It starts with action (protagonists are chased by a friggin construction crane!! how awesome!), it's middle is action (they escape in a funeral hearse) and the end is action, it never stops.
I think the makers of Pathfinder wanted to make something like that, because the "action" in it (notice the "" in action) doesn't stop, except that it didn't move the story forward. The difference between Terminator 3 and Pathfinder lies in their execution: in Terminator everything was bright and detailed, in Pathfinder everything was dark, shaky, grainy and even unfocused. (I haven't checked the budget for the movie, so that could be an excuse...) (although I think it was a nice budget).
So, Joel, was anything good in this movie?
Yes, Joel, actually, there was something. The costume design was awesome. The vykings looked so interesting, that I wouldn't have minded if the movie was only about THEM (except of course, if it lacked plot and photography, then it would be as bad). So, yes, costume design was great, specially the helmets with the horns and the weapons. Aside from that, Pathfinder is a no-no.
Pathfinder's grade is: F+ (the plus for costume design, of course).
Ps. I just learned that Viking is actually with an "i" instead of a "y", but vyking looked more gothic to me, so I kept it after all.

Joel's Movie/Book review: El Perfume

Good Friday Temptation (aka Disney)
Today I recieved an email from Disney saying that there is an opportunity to go back to work this summer (and most importantly: they will provide housing and transportation, which is, well, exactly what I would be lacking). I, uh, have been waiting for an email like this since I came back from Orlando the last time. But now, after I have made hard desicions about what to do in summer, they send this email to tempt me. Grrr. But, I can't go. I can't. I can't! I have class until mid July, and they want me in May! I can't. Can I? Oh, the temptations!
I wonder if it is just a coincidence that the Disney temptation comes on Good Friday, or if it was premeditated?
hmm.

Chronicle of the currently-refurbishing Borders bookstore
I work at Plaza las Américas (aka the Mall). Sometimes instead of going home, as every normal person would do, I go to the Borders Bookstore. I go in and out as casually as if it were my own house. The employees must know me already because I go in dressed in my uniform ("here comes that guy again") (although, I don't think I would be that interesting).
The thing is, that I went in a week (or maybe two ago) and the store was just as I remembered. I would always go to the horror section, and knew exactly where Steven Kings books were. I would go to the graphic novels section (which, was, bytheway, right next to the horror books, go figure). I would go to the literature section, and to the new releases.
But yesterday, I went in through the second floor and halfway in I notice that there are some new racks displaying the music CDs. And I was like: "uuuu, how cool, new furniture". But then, I saw the wall (where the CDs were before) and horror! They were remodeling! It wasnt that bad, really, just some empty racks, unfinished painting and broken carpets, and CSI's "danger" yellow-strips to prevent curious people going in.
So, I went down the stairs and from the top I see everything in different layout. Oh gosh. I was lost. Súper (accentedly) lost. Where was the new realease rack? Oh, there it is: a WHOLE wall now displays them. Where is Steven King? Oh, there it is: a whole rack (taller than the one before) with his books, and of other horror writers (Dean Koonts, anybody?). Where is my literature? Oh, there it is... it is actually in the same place. And the graphic novels? Two racks down the hall!!! Dang, everything is so different.
But wait! There's more! The plot thickens! There are now Hallmark cards (not Hallmark, some other brand, but you know what I mean). And the Magazines!!! The offering is two or three times what they had before!
But Joel, where does all of this fit? Well, hehe... As I am walking through the newly arranged racks of books I notice that there is something wrong. Hmm, there used to be a wall right here, next to the sex area. Wait. There USED to be a wall here!!! Oh my gosh! It's gone! It's gone! The bookstore is now endless (almost). There is an avenue, with books on each side of it, stacked high, and it makes such a great vanishing point of the converging perspective (puntos de fuga por la perspectiva), it's almost like unreal. It's like watching the far horizon while the sun sets. (So poetic, dang). Anyway, the point is that it is so hugeamongous that I was feeling a great fulfillment. Does anyone else gets this excited about a bunch of books? (Of course! Hence the fact that they expanded! Hello!). So I was like a child in a playground. But I guess it is good marketing for the store. The bigger the store, the longer people are inside, the longer people are inside, the higher the probability (risk, ssshhh) of buying some odd or nice book. Cash cash cash.
Still, Borders will see me as often as always. Possibly even more. And, anyone who likes books, and says that doesn't like the store, lies! (Well, probably not anyone). I mean, who doesn't like to play? Come on! It's just a fairground for us!
Long live the capitalistic mindset of the western countries! Hurra! Hahaha.

When Internet smelled like new
Yeah, I remember it with a kind of longing. It is like remembering your childhood... Well, I WAS in high school when first I got into the internet. It was such a new thing for me. First, I would listen to the modem ring and snap and crackle while it connected, and then, as if it were magic, information would pour down on the windows.
Going into yahoo was an event. Well, not going into yahoo... but FINDING yahoo, because I didn't know yahoo existed until, probably, three months later. I remember those days on Internet Explorer, clicking on the now-totally-worthless (to me) Search button... the sidebar would open and there we had Altavista, Yahoo, Msn, Lycos (I wonder what happened to Lycos) (hmm, its still there, collecting dust in oblivion) (I guess).
Oh, I remember the first night of chat. Because, the thing about the nineties (or 98-99 at least) was going into the chat. Ooh! and the webpages looked so 90's too, so Windows 98... So,I wrote "chat" on the sidebar search engine of IE, and there it came up: Microsoft Chat, the best chat that there ever were and that there ever will be, ready for me to download it. And "oh, Dios, what the heck is download?", I said to myself, probably in a marked spanish-ly-ish-accented-english. I trusted my gut that it meant something like loading it down (whatever that shit means; my gosh! who made such an oxymoron of a word?!!!), or it meant getting it all set-up. In those days microsoft could be trusted (or I was more naïve than now). I chose my nickname *Joel tries to remember which one it was, but in the meantime he will digress*:
That Microsoft Chat was awesome. It featured characters, as in comic-book characters, and it also showed them in action. When you wrote something, your character would move into one of 10 positions, according to what you said, it was great (although, messy when there were more than three people). So, I chose my character, it was called Xeno, he was an alien, he was black and white (color came later, just like color came to TV-sets). And I was off. I went into a room which I don't remember now, and talked for the first time through the wires of the computers... The chat even had the sweet, new smell of unpacked hard plastic, just like my new ergonomic keyboard and my hugeamongous 19"-screen monitor; the chat also had the same electrostatic tinkling that the plastic had, it was the energy of new things.
*Joel cannot remember his nickname*
And I went into the room. So many things were going on at the same time. People were saying lots of things (by this time I took the comic-book off and let it all be text, just like a messenger). And then, all of a sudden someone whispered me. I was sooo nervous! I don't know why!! I was shaking uncontrollably. I was laughing uncontrollably. She said "hi". And I said "hi" back. We started to talk. My english horrible, and my typing even more so, I probably took ages to answer her. But, we managed to communicate. She was 25, I remember, she lived in frigging Korea, and she was chatting from her job. I was already helping on an illicit affair!! By this time, my mother had parked herself behind my chair reading what I was reading, and asking me to translate. She was also asking me how the hell I could find the keys on the keyboard. I typed back to the girl, word by word, letter by letter, one finger at a time that I was 16, that I was puertorrican, and that I was in an art highschool. And then I added (and I clearly remember this): "it is so weird that the first person I talk to on the internet is 12 hours away". It was awesome. It was like loosing your virginity (well, it was, methaphorically speaking).
But, there was this unfounded fear that, by giving away your email address, you could get your identity snatched. She was the first stranger I gave my email to. But, as hard as it can be to believe it, my email wasn't a hotmail account, so, I dont have it anymore. She sent me a mail once, and I emailed back, but she never answered. I thought that she was surely thrown out of work for chatting during work-hours and she is now living in a country house over a river.
But, do you remember that fear of giving away your email? To me, it was like giving the address to my house to a serial killer, that's how it felt. Now? Well, now I don't really care... wait, that's not true, I do care, because now I fear 1. stupid FORWARDS, 2. spam mail selling viagra, 3. hi5 emails (whatever that shit is), so it is a different fear now. Not fear, but wary. And now, look, WE even write about ourselves in huge and public blogs.
Microsoft started asking for money to use his chat, and so its demise came. Then, came accesible porn. Then came latinchat. Then yahoo games: chess. Then Yahoo became my homepage. My computer has had at least 6 or 7 upgrades since 1999, its original cd-room just broke down two months ago. I still use Microsoft Works from 1999 (which is so much lighter and hence functional, than the over-achieving Word!). My ergonomic psychedelic keyboard is dirty, but intact, none of the letters have become erased, nor have the keys fallen out. My mouse went through three metamorphosis: 1. plain-white ball mouse, 2. transparent-blue ball mouse with roller, 3. grey, ergonomic optical mouse with roller. The speakers have also been changed three times. The monitor still works, but it has to be warmed up, so my brother has it on another room. And the printer, best printer ever made, still works, as if it were new. And me, oh gosh, internet is like eating almost; or not as dependable as eating, it's more like taking a shower (optional in many cold contries, NOT here)...
Amazing how life changes and sometimes we don't realize it.

TV series: The Riches
The Riches

OMG, Stardust Hotel was dusted!!!
And what were we doing? I was writing about annoying roosters, and you were reading about them.
Yes, the Stardust Hotel in Las Vegas was imploded last 13th of March. You don't know which hotel is that? Just watch the "classic" picture I took when I went to Vegas.

Joel, how did you get to know about these sad news? Well, Joel, I was randomly checking cities at the newly found website www.craigslist.org, and after perusing through New York, San Francisco and Puerto Rico, I went to Las Vegas, and suddenly found some ad in which someone was looking for a cameraman who could film the "implosion of the Stardust". And I was like this:
:-o
:-o
"Such a "historic" hotel is going to be imploded?", I said. And then I HAD to come here and write about it, and I also HAD to post one of the best pictures I took in Vegas: the picture of the Stardust Hotel sign.
I remember the night... I was walking up on the Strip (I say "up" because I was going "north" (I think)), it was super cold, I had my hands inside the long sleeves of my borrowed jacket, and those in turn, I had them burried in the pockets of my pants. I could see my breath when I breathed out, and suddenly I saw the sign with the many sparkled stars gleaming and twinkling. I reached it. And I looked up, there were no clouds in the dark sky of that night. And I saw the sign up close. I took my camera out of a pocket inside the jacket. I was shaking from the cold. And I shot a picture. I took three or four with different appertures and shutter speeds (because I'm a perfectionist like that), but I only kept one pic, because I was running out of memory in the memory card. So, of the 200 plus pictures I have from Vegas THIS/THAT pic is the ONLY one I have from the hotel.
Vegas is such an everchanging place, historic places are not preserved that much (except in museums), because the entertainment business is always renewing itself. So it depends on how you look at it, it is good because it keeps things fresh, but it also makes you forget of good times past.

*Joel thinks to himself (duh, of course he's going to THINK to HIMSELF)* Qué emoción, tengo fans.

Ahora, empieza el post:
Dear Anonimous:
Thank you for your visit to this humble and awesomely awesome blog. I am über glad that you've liked it (and that got so far in posts), and that it has made you laugh... I am hugeamongously flattered. (AND the fact that this is in English has nothing to do with sarcasm, just in case!
You have two concerns: The answer to the first is: La Central. And the answer to the second is Feliciano. Hopefully now your concerns are clear. And hopefully now your Anonimous status would also be unanonimated (whatever word that is).
Again, thank you for your continued support and Godspeed.
Joel
Ps.: Dude (or dudette), that's an ooold post! I'm really glad to know that people actually go that far back!

Maldito Gallo / Stupid Rooster
((english below))

In my yard there is a hen. Its/her name is Cleopatra, because in the end my mother is the one who names all the animals in this house (the rabbit was originally named: Lichón, but she named him/it/her Susana, and with that name him/it/her stayed) (but that is also for another post). Well, it so happens that, apparently, Cleopatra the hen was very lonely on her enourmous cage-mansion (believe me it is like a mansion), hence my father had the great idea of bringing her a rooster "so that she wouldn't stay dry" (or something thus he said). Cool, the rooster is pretty and all that... but, the night fell and the rooster sings all through it. I can't sleep! because my window faces the backyard. Even the neighbor complained, but the truth is that he complains about everything; he even complains about the water that naturally flows through the front of his house out on the gutters of the street (he seriously complains about that).
Roosters answer to each other. What do I mean by that? I mean that if a rooster hears another one singing in the distance, the first will answer to the second and viceversa. Cool. Well, on the distance, very very far into the distance, on the confines of the cemetery behind my backyard, I could hear a rooster sing. And the one in my yard would answer him. But today, before getting up from bed I heard the rooster from the distance singing ever closer. Clearly I thought I was dreaming. But nooo. It WAS closer. And now that I look through my window I see ANOTHER stupid rooster singing in my yard, outside of the cage-mansion, harassing Cleopatra the hen. The rooster sings, and then the one inside the cage sings back and they're making me crazy. I want them both out. I want them cooked, fried, sauteéd, whatever, I just want the hen alone which, even thought she is a bit gruff, she is very very silent.
UPDATE: Now I can hear a THIRD rooster singing close by. If anyone finds me bleeding and slung off of some precipice it is because I finally lost my mind.

No sé...

I don't know but... is this only happening to me? It is one of those things to which you say: "ah, this is only happening to me", and then you realize somehow that there are eightthousand people who also suffer from "it". Since I realized that my nose hurt, I'd ask myself if someone else's also hurt. But, (by causes unknown to me, or because of this shame that society teaches us, a shame that is always unmentioned, but which clearly says: you don't speak of boogers to people, nor of shit, nor of piss) I've never been able to ask.
One time I had the guts, I don't know how, to ask to a co-worker, who had really long nails, "how could she wipe her ass with such nails?". Because I would imagine the most crucial of hand-movements to make the nails avoid a nasty gash to that sensitive part of the body, not to mention the dilemma it would sugest if the tissue paper broke: a mess of shit under the nail... ugh, that would smell for a long part of the day. Anyway, the thing is that, I felt great when my curiosity about the nail-wiping was explained. The said co-worker, who wasn't ashamed of anything (she was like that), took some napkins from the table and rolled on the tip of her fingers/nails, with that she said it all. I was like: "ooh". It is so good to know something when you didn't know!
Well, now I have another issue. Is it me, or does anybody else's nose hurts when you have hard boogers inside? Because, man, they're a bitch.
But, I think I have something else. Because I know for sure that there are no boogers inside my nose, I know because I go by obssessed about the cleanliness of its interior; still it hurts when I press it or touch it. The only thing that makes it all better is wetting it, moisturizing it, or pressing it until the pain goes away (don't ask me how that happens, but it works). Maybe I'm bleeding internally and I have coagulated blood in there; but, if that were the case, gosh, I would have needed a blood donations ages ago (hmm, that may explain my sudden episodes or tiredness). Would it be that the nose is like the ears, where the more dirty wax (I say dirty because that's the normal preconception, but that's not technically true; but that's for another post), where the more earwax is better? Oh, but I shutting up now; I'm like an old lady talking about my pains. But, the thing is, that it intrigues me... Does this happen to anyone else?

When your head fills with Someone
And it may sound kind of silly: "having one's head full of Someone", but that is exactly what happens. You wake up every morning and your head reminds you of THAT specific someone, called Someone. And when you are taking a shower your head suddenly says to you: "what would happen if Someone were here under this falling water right now?". Or when you are reading, your head keeps bothering you, keeps shaking your shoulders trying to get your attention just to say: "I'm sure Someone would like that" or "I wonder what Someone would think about this image in this book". And when you eat you think of Someone, and the sounds Someone would make as Someone chewed wholly-frosted flakes. Or when you are watching a movie, or a tv-show and you head nags at you saying: "Someone would reeeeallly like that, oh yes". Or when you are riding the bus/train, or driving your car, and your head dangerously distracts you with: "Wouldn't you wish Someone was sitting right there?", and you head points to the seat next to you. How can anyone live with Someone filling your head ALL the time?! HOW. Someone tell me how to get Someone out of this head. It is supermegarchi overwhelmingly huge to... keep!
